The growth in the coaching industry

Right now, millions of people across the world are struggling with eating issues, but there isn’t enough support to meet the demand.

In 2020, the value of the health coach market was $13.6 billion; this will rise to $28 billion by 2030. This kind of growth is extraordinary. Now is the time to become a Certified Recovery Coach.

Discover the incredible transformational power of Recovery Coaching

Over the past decade, we have witnessed time and time again the power of Recovery Coaching for disordered eating.

Watch this short video to get an idea of the kind of impact our coaches are making with their clients:

Just look at some of the feedback our Coaches regularly receive:

“My coach took me from my lowest point in life to becoming a person who finally stopped thinking that something was wrong with me and blaming myself! She changed my life for the better!”

Absolutely life-changing. I can now enjoy eating out with family and friends, holidays, day-to-day life is less stressful, and food is now just food” – Name withheld.

Name Withheld

“I was binging and purging six times a day, spending $300 a day on food, and unable to function. I was demoralized, and I hated myself. I fully credit Jen with showing me the way out! Her perfect mix of pragmatism and empathy were key to my recovery. Jen is a lifesaver. Literally.”

“Having Ieva as my personal coach has been absolutely amazing! She truly helped me to keep on pushing forward… and just getting to talk to her each week was so refreshing!”

“On my very first Zoom call, I knew that recovery from 45 years of Bingeing was no longer going to be part of my life. She told me there was a solution. I believed her and in fact; this is what has happened!

“Thank you so much for your help! You are great! I am so much happier when food is just a small detail of my day, not THE BIGGEST detail of my day.”

However, there is another side to Recovery Coaching
(hint: it’s not just about your clients)

Whilst coaching can make a huge impact on your client’s life; there is a deeper change that happens within you.

Recovery coaching can bring meaning and purpose to your life and career.

You get to experience joy and fulfilment as your clients start to take steps they once believed were impossible, all thanks to your guidance. For many, it can feel like tapping into your life’s purpose.

We asked some of our certified Recovery Coaches, “why did you want to become a recovery coach, and what do you enjoy most about it?”

This is what they said:

“I love providing a safe space for people to talk about challenges and guiding them to gain confidence in full recovery!”
Coach Laura
“Every day I get to wake up and meet these wonderful people from across the world and see their lives change in front of my eyes!”
Coach Ieva
“I became a coach as I wanted to help people find the way out of an eating disorder after overcoming it myself.”
Coach Emi
“I love providing a safe space for people to talk about challenges and guiding them to gain confidence in full recovery!”
Coach Catherine
“It’s pretty extraordinary and very rewarding“

About Binge Code

Binge Code was founded in 2007 by Alison Kerr and her husband, Richard Kerr.

Since then:

  • We’ve expanded to include a team of Recovery Coaches located around the world.
  • Over 10,000 clients have passed through our coaching programs.
  • We’ve been featured in leading publications such as Psychology Today and The Telegraph, and have been referenced in other books on eating disorder recovery.
  • We’ve published two successful books, The Binge Code, and the Bulimia Help Method both of which are amongst the highest-rated recovery books on Amazon.
  • We’ve launched a successful certification program to train a new wave of Recovery Coaches.

The Binge Code Recovery Coach Certification Program

Our Recovery Coach Certification is a community-based, date-specific, interactive training program, including a large element of roleplaying coaching sessions (most online training courses are simply a bunch of downloads – from experience, we know that doesn’t work).

Meet your Master Trainer

Dr Laura Hutchinson Christoph, PhD, NBC-HWC

  • Ph.D. in Public Health Nutrition
  • National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC)
  • Certified Precision Nutrition Coach Level-1
  • Certified Level-1 Baptiste Yoga Instructor
  • Certified McMillan Running Coach
  • Certified Institute for Integrative Nutrition Holistic Heath Coach

Dr Laura Hutchinson Christoph has over a decade of experience in health and recovery coaching, as well as two decades of experience as a college nutrition professor. She has been working with Binge code for 5 years, empowering clients through individual and group coaching as well as leading the first Recovery Works certification program.

Laura struggled with bulimia and compulsive over-exercising for over fifteen years before recovering with the help of the Binge Code Program.

What our students say about our certification program

This course absolutely met my expectations. Additionally, the lecturers are professionals with years of expertise in the field, precisely knowing what they are teaching you.

The team has put together over 50 practical worksheets that will make your job easier once you begin coaching. The course is entirely online, and the individual lessons are pre-recorded, making it easy to connect from anywhere and catch up if you miss a session.

I highly recommend it to anyone considering a positive career change and playing with the idea of supporting others on the journey that we, as former patients, are so familiar with.”

Barbora Linhartová

For over 50 years, I lived with disordered eating and a distorted body image. I tried every program under the sun: many types of counseling and therapy, ED recovery programs, and self-help guides.

Nothing worked.

It wasn’t until I found Binge Code coaching that I finally recovered – completely and permanently.

That experience inspired me to become a recovery coach.

The course has been an amazing, life-changing experience. Not only did it provide me with the skills, knowledge, and methodology to become an effective, empathetic coach, it helped me find my true calling – my soul’s purpose.

The combination of live sessions, coaching pods, and pre-recorded sessions allows for flexibility to go at your own pace.

I also appreciate the relationships I have built with my cohort members. Their support, instruction, knowledge, modeling, and inspiration are priceless!

Being a part of the certification course has easily been one of my favourite things about this year! I have never felt such a deep sense of belonging as being in a class surrounded by people who had all struggled in the past with disordered eating themselves, and were passionate about bringing others into recovery too.

Being able to safely open up without fear of judgement and be met with consistent warmth and understanding healed something in me that I didn’t know needed healing, and learning and growing together in such an accepting environment was a truly beautiful thing.

I would sign up for this course again in a heartbeat. Thank you!”

“Four years ago, after a fifty-year battle with disordered eating, I recovered. I wanted to share this gift of recovery with those still suffering and in need of help.

The Certificate Training program exceeded my expectations. I was deeply impacted by the wealth of knowledge, practicality, and the support and encouragement from the brilliant and compassionate individuals in the program.

It was a transformative experience that gave me many tools in order that I may help others to recover from disordered eating. I highly recommend the Binge Eating Recovery Coach Training to anyone who wants to make a positive impact in others’ lives by helping them recover from disordered eating.”

Sultana Stavrides

I completed the Binge Code certification program and have nothing but praise for the course. The weekly course content was brilliant and is yours to keep and look back on whenever you need it including resources that you can share with your clients.

We have also had sessions on marketing our business which will continue beyond the course. I feel that all of the trainers involved were wonderful, all having suffered from eating issues themselves and I also feel that they are really passionate about helping people to train to spread the word to as many people as possible that full recovery is a reality.”

Jo Cowles

“I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to do the certification- I found it so incredibly helpful and eye opening.

I’ve been following along at my own pace and was so impressed and grateful for the level of attention to detail and care that is evident in the modules, worksheets and live streams.

Thank you so much for providing the certification course – I can’t wait to help these people find peace and complete freedom with food that they deserve!”

Isabella Kenton-Dau

Kasia Balicka (1)

“When I recovered from ED using the Bulimia Help Method (after 27 years of constant battle) I had this strong wish to help others to live life free from eating disorders.

The Binge Code Certification course was tailored exactly to my needs. It provided me with all the tools needed to work professionally with my clients and deepened my conviction that I’m going in the right direction.

I would recommend this course to everyone who is ready and willing to help others to leave the vicious circle of eating disorders.”

Recovery coaching can make a huge impact on your client’s lives, which means that your time is truly valued.

Therefore, on average, most recovery coaches charge $80-$150 per session. However, some recovery coaches charge much less than this, and others charge considerably more.

Absolutely! We expressly encourage people with lived experience of disordered eating and other food issues to apply for coach training.

We find that people with personal experience of food issues tend to have a heightened level of empathy and unique insight into the recovery experience, which can be invaluable in supporting others through recovery.

You might be thinking… “Do I really have what it takes to become a successful Recovery Coach?”

“Who am I to believe I can make a difference?”

“How can I feel confident enough to finally go for it?

If you have these doubts,

There is one really important thing you should know about recovery coaching:

There is no one type of person best suited to becoming a recovery coach.

Existing qualifications and professional experience in areas like nutrition, psychology and social work are helpful. But in truth, it is far more important for you to be naturally empathetic, caring, and non-judgemental than it is for you to have a certain educational background or a specific type of work experience.

In short, your personal qualities matter more than your education or background!

The very fact you’re reading this means something special!

It means that you’re drawn to helping people meet their true potential and to fulfilling a role as someone who makes a difference in the world.

While you are free to define recovery on your own terms we ask that you have not displayed any symptoms of eating distress for a minimum of 12 months before applying to our training program.

In addition, we ask that you have not received any treatment, therapy or counselling for eating or body issues for a minimum of 12 months before applying to our training program.

Before working with clients, you must be in a safe, secure place in your recovery.

This Certification is ideal for:

  • Past sufferers of disordered eating  Someone who has personally recovered from an eating disorder and now wants to give back and help others to do the same. (We require all past sufferers to have been in full recovery for at least 18 months.)
  • Support Workers
A professional or health care worker who engages with clients suffering from binge eating or bulimia.
  • Anyone who wants to make a living as a coach
Someone frustrated with their current job and dreaming of a life filled with meaning, freedom, and impact.
  • Coaches
Wishing to expand their current coaching skillset.
  • Supporting a loved one
An individual who would like to know more about supporting a friend or loved one in recovery.

To become a Certified Coach, you’ll need to:

  • Complete 100% of the learning curriculum, which consists of about 1.5 hours of pre-recorded videos per week.
  • You also need to attend or watch the recordings of the live sessions (20hrs roughly)
  • You must complete 2 written assessments
  • And finally, you’ll need to undertake 10 hours of coaching practice (either within the Coaching Pods offered within the certification or with external clients).

Our training program prepares certified recovery coaches to work with a range of people, including those who:

  • Regularly binge eat or feel out of control around food.
  • Experience excessive emotional overeating.
  • Experience guilt, fear or shame when eating.
  • Are done with yo-yo dieting but unsure of how to break the cycle.
  • Have been diagnosed with (or have self-diagnosed) binge eating disorder.
  • Have been diagnosed with (or have self-diagnosed) bulimia.
  • Are seeking help to overcome fasting, overeating or over-exercising.
  • Are seeking help to make peace with their bodies.

Our recovery coach training package is delivered over 16 weeks.

You must complete all elements of this training, including practice coaching sessions, within 12 months of signing up.

The weekly time commitment is roughly 3-6 hours.

While live attendance is strongly encouraged, we understand that work commitments, life responsibilities, and timezone conflicts mean this is not always possible. Consequently, all webinars and training sessions will be recorded for those who are unable to attend on the day.

Not to worry: you can catch up on your weekly training videos when you get the time. And all live sessions are recorded, so you can watch them at any time even if you miss one.

The entire coaching program is designed to be flexible and adaptable – so as long as you stay consistent and focused on the big picture, you’ll get all the support you need to reach the finish line.

Yes! Upon completion you’ll get an official certification that you can add to your LinkedIn profile or any other platform you’d like.

Based on the rigorous training, support and expertise we provide, we believe that the cost of our recovery coach training program is highly competitive.

Currently, there are only two other recovery coach training programs available online.

One of those programs does offer a lower rate. However, it provides only six hours of pre-recorded video training which we believe is highly insufficient to prepare you to move forward into your career as a recovery coach.

The other coach training program is more extensive, however, there are no live elements (it is all pre-recorded) and costs in excess of $6,000 USD.

We actively encourage you to explore all of the recovery coach training options available to you, so you can move forward confidently in your decision to be trained by us!

We want you to be overjoyed with your experience. That’s why we’re giving you 15 days to decide if it’s for you. If it’s not for any reason – even if you just can’t spare the time for the weekly sessions, you can request a full refund (minus your deposit fee).

Recovery Coaches help their clients to:

  • Focus on the present without too much emphasis on the past.
  • Take proactive steps in the here and now.
  • Become goal-focused and driven by measurable change
  • Ask, “How can I…” instead of “Why did I?”

Therapists help their clients to:

  • Reflect on underlying issues and root causes.
  • Focuses on processing emotions related to the past and present.
  • Develop heightened introspective awareness.
  • Ask, “Why did I….” instead of “How can I….”
  • Both recovery coaches and therapists work collaboratively with clients to tackle complex issues while providing a safe, non-judgmental environment.
  • Both recovery coaches and therapists rely on evidence-based models for their work and help clients build new skills and habits.
  • Both recovery coaches and therapists help their clients to focus on positive behaviour changes.
  • Often recovery coaches work in collaboration with therapists, supporting clients to take action in their day-to-day lives.

Though we cannot guarantee anything, and make no promises, at the same time there is always the possibility that students may be given the option to work as a part of the Binge Code team.
